The Chicago Botanic Garden's collection includes almost 100 varieties of dogwood from 20 species (7 of which are native) and over 2,400 plants. The genus includes 45-60 species, divided into subgenera about which taxonomists disagree. Cornus kousa Cornus controversa Flowers: Dogwoods bloom in early spring and summer. Yellow flowers on short stalks bloom in early spring before the leaves. Scaly, exfoliating bark develops on mature trunks. It typically grows over time to 15-25' tall with a spread to 12-20' wide. The attractive grayish-brown bark exfoliates on mature branches. Needs another Cornus Mas variety as a pollinizer. The tree grows to 10'- 15' and has gorgeous yellow spring flowers. Flowers give way to tiny red berries that mature in the summer. A very heavy producer of pungent, delicious, glossy dark red, oval fruit 1 1/4 inches long. It features tiny, star-like, yellow flowers that appear in March before the foliage and deep green, oval leaves turn to a purple tinge in autumn. Cornus sericea is very adaptable to differing soils and can even grow in standing water. Cornus sanguinea requires well-drained soil. Cornus alba is best in moist well drained soil. Cornus nuttalii Cornus mas Cornus kousa Form: Dogwoods tend to be small trees, with a round form and layered branching. Some species have large bracts surrounding smaller true flower clusters in the center. The plant is a multi-stemmed, low-branching, round to oval, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows 15 – 20 feet tall. Yellow-twig variety with white and gold leaves. Every year those long-awaited first flowers of spring always arouse my senses and give birth to a primal appreciation of the renewal of life. A particularly hardy plant, it is more vigorous than the species and thus suitable for the northern Midwest. Golden Glory is a multi-stemmed upright form of Cornelian cherry that was introduced by the Synnesvedt Nursery Company of Illinois.
